What is the Head Start Model?
Head Start was implemented during the summer of 1965, and approximately 550,000 children in 2,500 child development centers were enrolled in the program. The purpose of Head Start was literally to give children a head start in their educational experience and, it was hoped, this good start would be transferred onto future life experiences. Today, the National Head Start program serves approximately 752,000 children and families and is based on the premise that all children share certain needs and that children with disabilities, in particular, can benefit from a comprehensive developmental program to meet those needs.
Who is MET-Head Start?
The service area for the MET-Head Start program is comprised of six counties Austin, Chambers, Hardin, Liberty , Montgomery, and Waller. Eight centers serving 760 three and four year old children are located throughout these counties.
Goals of the Head Start Environment
- The encouragement of self-confidence, curiosity and social skills.
- Success through School Readiness programming.
- The improvement of child’s health and physical abilities.
- Parent involvement as the very keystone of the programs success.
